So you’ve been working hard and you’re ready for a massage? Or you’re at least thinking about it? Getting a Swedish massage is a great place to start, or a great place to continue if you’ve had these massages in the past. If you imagine a massage, a Swedish massage is probably what you’re thinking of—it’s the most well-known type of massage in the West.

Swedish massage is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology—as opposed to being based upon energy work that is more common in Asian styles of massage. During the massage, the therapist will rub your skin with massage oil and perform different massage strokes across the whole body. This warms up the muscles to release tension and “knots.” And while this work feels great, there are many benefits to the Swedish massage:

Relaxation & Stress Reduction: This is probably one of the most desired part of massage. The massage will release tension in your muscles, allowing you to feel relaxed and at peace. It’s often very rewarding after finishing a hard and stressful project, or a relief to take a moment for yourself during a busy week.

Pain Relief: While it may not completely eliminate the pain you are experiencing, massage can be an effective way to help you manage that pain. Your therapist can target a specific area to help improve circulation and relaxation to help bear the pain a little better.

Increased Circulation: The strokes in Swedish massage across your body imitate the movements in the circulatory system. By moving blood through the congested areas the massage improves the blood circulation. In turn, better circulation can enhance blood flow, naturally lower blood pressure, and improve body function.

Dissolution of Adhesions: Swedish massage can help break up muscle adhesions and increase the healing of scar tissue in the long run, allowing you to feel better faster.

Although Swedish massages are typically performed with the person completely naked under the towel/sheet, you are more than welcome to leave on your underwear if it makes your more comfortable—many newcomers do. Our therapist will put you at ease and give you a run-down of what will happen before the massage so that you are as comfortable as possible. After all, it’s supposed to be a relaxing experience, not a stressful one! The therapist will also ask you if there are certain areas you would like to focus on, if you have any injuries, and how much pressure you would like applied. The massage is all about you, so make sure you communicate any needs or wants to your therapist.
